GUILD WARS 2′S SECOND SOUTHSUN UPDATE IS COMING SOON

It hasn’t even been a month since the last update, but Guild Wars 2 is rolling along with even more rapid-fire content with Last Stand at Southsun, the latest addition to the game’s Living Story.
Due out on May 28th, Last Stand at Southsun will charge players with joining Inspector Kiel of the Lionguard to hunt down the Sylvari renegade named Canach and thwart his attempts to attack Southsun Cove.
The update will feature the following:
- New Improved World XP: Players will be able to gain rewards for doing even more in the World vs. World portion of the game, receiving awards for destroying siege weapons, escorting non-player characters, aiding with repairs, and more.
- Greater Variety and More Rewards in WvW: World vs. World XP is gained for playing however you see fit thanks to daily achievements. Each World rank you gain will also net you a chest with WvW loot.
- New WvW Abilities and Matchup Changes: New abilities like Burning Oil Mastery and Defense Against Guards have been added, giving WvW a refreshing boost.
- Custom PvP Arenas and Spectator Mode Beta: Bugs have been fixed and players can now use Custom Arena Time Tokens to extend their time.
- Infusions and Ascended Gear in WvW: You can now purchase Ascended rings and amulets in WvW, as well as upgrade your abilities with six new Infusions. New Laurel and Badge Merchants will be available on each map to help facilitate this.
- New Southsun Cove Rewards: Until June 11th, 2013, players can find their own Mini Reef Riders, which act as floating companions. Players can also earn limited-edition rewards from looting creatures and chests in Southsun Cove, and also by playing the Crab Toss game.
- Exclusive Southsun Items: During the Secret of Southsun events, players can earn the Fervid Censer and Sclerite Karka Shells, which are two exclusive back items.

In normal fantasy parlance, a Dragon Bash would be a thing that you do to a dragon, preferably with a giant bludgeoning device. In Guild Wars 2, it’s an upcoming update, bringing a celebratory festival to the city of Lion’s Arch. Admittedly, as part of the festival there will be plenty of dragon bashing – it’s just that these particular wyrms are of the smaller, less dangerous piñata family.
Folk music? Officially the most terrifying Guild Wars 2 update yet.
Kicking off June 11th, Lion’s Arch will be transformed into the “bustling epicentre” of the month long event, redecorated with giant holograms and firework displays. As well as the candy dropping piñatas, players will find mini-projectors throughout the world, containing holographic minions which grant special reward chests. Players will also get to try a series of minigames, including Moa Racing, and magic dodge-ball variant Dragon Ball.
In addition to the festivities, the update will also provide PvP improvements, including more accurate leaderboards and an Authorized Shoutcaster Program.

While those players rebuilding your walls may be performing a vital service, theirs is usually thankless work.
“Some of the major systems in place currently are not nearly as robust as they could be. Commanders are a major part of the battle, but right now their tools for commanding are few. Guilds are an important part of strategic gameplay as well, but they aren’t rewarded much for taking an active, positive role.
“These are things we want to improve on because we feel that not only can they increase player investment in the outcome of any particular play session or match, but they simply make the game better for everyone.”
All of the above will be analysed and addressed moving forward, Carter added, and stressed that ArenaNet want to give players more reason to move away from the overly-adopted Thief and Commander classes.
The team also wants to stop large groups of player – dubbed ‘Zergs’ – from dominating the battlefield, and is looking at counter-measures.

Guild Wars 2 Authorised Shoutcaster Programme promotes popular PvP commentators

With the launch of custom arenas and spectator mode, PvP in Guild Wars 2 is becoming progressively more eSports-y. Sprouting up around the newly enabled arena bouts are a group of shoutcasters, acting as commentators for this virtual violence.
Arenanet are now reaching out to that burgeoning community, “authorising” some of the more vocal members, and granting them privileged access to broadcast bouts between highly rated teams.
The way it works is that whenever highly rated teams are matched-up for a spot of the old ultraviolence, these authorised shoutcasters will be notified and invited to spectate on the battle live. They’ll then be able to broadcast a stream of the match with their own commentary, allowing many more folk on the internet to see the battle.
Because Arenanet don’t want to spoil the games they’ll have the shoutcasters broadcast a delayed stream, meaning the commentators won’t be revealing a player’s tactics before they’ve implemented them in the battle.
According to a blog post from Allie Murdock, Arenanet’s PvP community coordinator, “In addition to being given the special privilege of entering into rated play, authorized shoutcasters will be given a Custom Arena to assist them in hosting matches and or creating their own shows.”
The first batch of authorised casters have been picked out by the folk at Arenanet, basing the decision on the casters activity on the forums and how much footage they’re producing. As the programme grows so will the number of authorised casters.

There’s a problem in the Guild Wars 2 World vs. World matching system, and it’s a subtle one that’s almost invisible until you look closer. Because of the way ratings are calculated and how the matchups happen, the net result for each server is always being matched up against the same servers. No matter how well you perform, you wind up locked into a certain tier without any hope of changes. It’s a problem that the development team is both aware of and is moving to address.
The short version of how things will work is that servers will be matched up semi-randomly, with ratings taken into account to assure that the spread between opponents isn’t too severe. More math beneath the surface takes into account both the current rating of a given world and its overall deviation, producing a “real” rating that will facilitate fair matches.
